Hindus Should Follow Muslim Pattern': Assam's Badruddin Ajmal On Population Boom

Badruddin Ajmal also reacted to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's recent comments on 'Love Jihad' in connection with the Shraddha Walker murder case.

Karimganj, Assam: Assam politician Badruddin Ajmal, chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF), on Friday sparked a fresh controversy by saying that Hindus should adopt the "Muslim pattern" and marry their children at a young age.

"Muslim men marry at the age of 20-22 and Muslim women also marry at 18 after reaching the age permitted by the government. On the other hand [Hindus] keep one, two or three illegal wives before marriage, bear children, enjoy and save money," he claimed.

When asked about the growth of the Muslim population - a frequent subject of right-wing invective - the head of AIDUF said: "After 40 they get married under pressure from their parents... So how can they be expected to have children? after 40? If you sow on fertile ground, only then you can bear a good harvest. Then it will grow."

Mr. Ajmal said, "They (Hindus) should also follow the pattern of Muslims and marry their children at a young age. Marry them at the age of 20-22, marry the girls at the age of 18-20 and then see how many children are born."

The politician also reacted to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's recent comments on "Love Jihad" in connection with the Shraddha Walker murder case.

"The Chief Minister is one of the top leaders of the country today. So, whoever stops him, you too will do four to five 'Love Jihads' and take away our Muslim girls. We will welcome it and not even fight." It will also show how much power you have,” said Mr. Ajmal.

Mr Sarma recently said there was an element of "Love Jihad" in the Shraddha Walkar case - a right-wing conspiracy theory that Muslim men woo Hindu women and force them to convert.

Calling for "love jihad", the chief minister said India needed a "powerful" prime minister like Narendra Modi, otherwise "Aaftab will be born in every city". Aaftab Ameen Poonawala has been arrested on charges of murdering his girlfriend Shraddha Walkar and dismembering her body.
